The History of Metalcraft Toys
Metalcraft Toys began as Metallic Industries in 1920. G. Carlton Hosch had a vision to make toys for two or more children to play with together. Many of the first toys that he and his company made were playground type toys. In 1926, sales of these types of toys began to decline. So Mr. Hosch went back to the drawing board and decided to rename the company "Metalcraft Juniors." In addition to renaming the company, they began to offer airplanes and building sets. These were very successful because, for a small price, parents were able to buy their children one package that could make many different types of airplane or train construction sets.
In 1931, Metalcraft designed a series of small, pressed steel trucks that sold for only 25 cents each. They had perfect timing with the creation of these trucks because the peak of The Great Depression forced families to downsize their spending. The pressed steel trucks have been by far their most popular toy ever produced. The production of these toys lasted from 1931 to the beginning of World War II. At that point the company faded away. This website focuses on the Metalcraft toys that were produced in the 1930's.*
