Modern Moving Models
From Times Gone By

Although  I write mostly about old toys, periodically I will veer off course, and present a post on something modern and most interesting.  I came across  Horizon Hobby this past week, and decided to write about the company. It's a stupendous company that sells flying, and driving scale models, that are usually gas-operated, and controlled by remote control. On occasion, I've seen these models and was mystified by a model plane that can fly like a "real-life" airplane. And so, that's how I decided to write today's post.

A flying model of a Fokker D.VII 30-60cc ARF, 87" (221 mm)

Some Specifications:

Flying Speed:  70 mph.    116.2 kph
Length:             72"          1829 mm
Weight:      23-28 lbs.     10.4 - 13 kg

When you visit this website, you will find lots of information about each model. As well, there are honest reviews of each model. The models come complete, but they need small motors (30-60 cc), a 6+ channel transmitter and receiver, batteries for the receiver and engine ignition, a  motor, either gas powered or electric powered, and tools and adhesives (glues) to assemble the model.

What's unique to the Horizon Hobby website, is the fact that there are videos to actually see how the airplane flies! In one video, a drone (I assume) followed the model above as it flew in the air! Wow! In another video for the same model, 3 people (I assume employees or the owners) talked about the model. They were so enthusiastic about the Fokker model!
In other videos, a videographer filmed a model as it flew in the sky twirling in the air.  The video was  professionally done and music was also added.

A Flying Model of an A-10 Thunderbolt II 64mm EDF BNF Basic with AS3X and SAFE Select

Some Specifications:

Flying Speed:  95 mph   153  kph
Length:          41.77"          1061 mm
Weight:     5 -5.2 lbs.        10.4 - 13 kg

So that's it for today.
I was so amazed at the Horizon Hobby website, that I spent about 3 hours just reading and watching those amazing videos of the flying airplanes.

One very important thing to mention is that these models must be flown under very strict and safe conditions, These are not toys, but serious model flying airplane, and it is important to know that.

Please visit this fascinating website and I hope that you experience the same very positive feelings that I had when I visited the website.
