Bing's Steam Driven Working Models

  (Another Exceptional Autumn Day)

Bing's Steam Driven Working Models

Yesterday, I presented  some example of  The Bing Toy Company's examples of their steam engines from the 1912 catalogue. At that time, there were lots of fine toys that children would actually play with and learn how things operated. The steam engine was one example. What's more interesting, that not only did this toy replicate the huge steam engines in factories, but that the toy actually had lots and lots of accessories called "working models"). The wheel that rotated on the steam engine would be grooved. AS such a strong cord or rubber band could be attached from the machine to another Bing toy called a "working model".  The working model would then perform a task based on a real life machine, or it could replicate a small figure actually working. I've only presented just 5 pages from the New Cavendish Books 2001 Catalogue, but there are many more pages. What I find interesting is that the Bing toy COmpany could actually produce so many models of steam engines and working models and be such a strong leader in the toy business. Obviously, Bing and other similar companies made these fine products for children, and I'm sure lots of adults.

What's interesting to note is that I'm sure these steam engines and their respective working models still work. However, I would advise anyone who owns one going to someone who can check on the safety issues of these toys before you actually decide to operate them. Then again, being true antiques, you might not want to work with them. On the other hand, there is a "Plan B".
There are still fine companies that I have written about that actually still make these time of steam engines and working models. One company that I've written about is the:

Mamod Steam Engine Company of Great Britain.
