An Exceptional  Group
of Old Meccano Airplanes

I was browsing for toys on LiveAuctioneers, when I came across a wonderful grouping of old Meccano airplanes. These beautiful planes will be part of a Milestone Auctions auction on LiveAuctioneers. That auction will start on August 24, 2024.

There is a nice grouping of toys, but my attention was focussed on the Meccano toys, with most of the listings of finished toys (no kits shown). I'm partial to Meccano, because that's how I started my blog, some 14 years ago!

If you take a look at this auction, you'll see plenty of nice finished Meccano airplanes, as well as a fabulous collection of Schuco toys.

I'm saddened when someone sells a collection that they have amassed over many years. On the other hand, these toys will find their ways into many different homes, and will again be enjoyed over time.

That's what collecting is all about!

So that's it for today.

Thanks for visiting my blog, and as always,
have a great part of the morning, afternoon, or evening, wherever
you may be.

Selkirk Auctioneers and Appraisers:
Photography at its' Best

Earlier this past week, I had just finished my first post about
Selkirk Auctioneers and Appraisers. The next day, I went to search
for more toys.

There was a whole auction of toys, but what best caught my eyes were 2 Tippco airplanes that were beautifully photographed. After I had written and posted Selkirk's first post, I wrote to them to proofread the post. But I also commented
how excellent their photography is.

Today's post is about 2 Tippco airplanes

The Tippco Toys Company was a German company started up in 1912
by Mr. Philipp Ullmann. It became very successful and had manufactured lithographed tin toys in Europe.

Airplane # 1

Description:

D-IGAN Tippco Double-Decker Fighter Airplane
German, circa 1940 , lithographed tin.

Wingspan:  14 1/2 inches x 10 inches (36.83 x 25.40 cm)

As you can see, the photography is excellent. Using a white background and hanging the toy planes by a wire line, gives them a sense of flight.

What I also like about Selkirk Auctioneers and Appraisers is that they provide lots of photographs for potential auction bidders to clearly see what they are bidding upon.

Airplane # 2

Description:

D-Olaf Tippco Single Wing Bomber Airplane

German, circa 1940, lithographed tin.
With composition pilot and four original bombs
that accept caps. Bombenflugzeub (Bomber Plane)

Wingspan x Length:
  14.30 inches  x 10 inches
36.32 cm x 25.4 cm

The photo below is a screen-capture of the last photo above.
I don't know if everybody knows this, but

if you click on any photo, a large-sized image will show,
and below that, small photos of all the photos of the blog
will appear.

You can move your cursor (arrow) to the first photo on the left,
and click on each of the photos to see them LARGE-SIZED.

I hoped that you enjoyed the post and the fantastic photography
to compliment these old toys. It's hard to believe that they are
more that 75 years old!

How time flies!
(please excuse the idiom)

A Fine Lincoln Airplane

July 28, 2019

Have You Any Information
on a Lincoln Airplane ?

From time-to-time, I receive questions about toys. Recently, I received an e-mail from Mr.
Lawrence Witen.  He has a very nice Lincoln Toys airplane from the 1950's. Lincoln Toys was a Canadian company that made pressed steel toys. Below are several links through which you can read up on this company.

Lawrence  wrote to me to find out if I could give hime an estimate for his airplane. I did a search, but couldn't find a price that I might provide to him. He remembered that on ebay, there was one that sold for $ about 1500.00 US dollars, but he couldn't find the specific link.

I wrote Lawrence back, and invited him to send me photos and dimensions, so that I might write a blog post about his fine airplane. I am also inviting anyone who might have any information on this 1950's Lincoln Toys toy to send me any information and links to any sites that had sold this airplane.

The dimensions of this Lincoln Toys airplane are:

Length:   9"   230 mm
Wingspan:   15"   380 mm

Thanks for dropping by,
And as always,

A New Toy Seller Helps Me Out

A New Toy Seller Helps Me Out

It's the new year, and lately we've had -15 to -23 C up here in Montreal. With a wind chill factor added, that will certainly free your nose off. We put our 16 year old dog Buddy outside, so that he doesn't have to walk very far in the cold and snow.  Fortunately, it is going to get warmer next week.

That will give me more time outside for shopping, since nobody likes to shop in blizzards!

In His Own Words:

Good Afternoon - Stacey ,
You have my permission to use my toy photos for you blog. You may improve photos with Photoshop but not change the contents of my photo's and you can and I also add a link my ebay store. I've been in the antique business on and off for the last 40 years. Now I'm retired and just collect. I add some pictures of about 1/3 of my collection.
 Always hunting.

Description:

YONEZAWA USAF B-29 BOMBER AIRPLANE TIN LITHO FRICTION JAPAN

VINTAGE 1950's USAF B-29 SUPERFORTRESS BOMBER TIN LITHO FRICTION TOY.
Made in JAPAN.  YONEZAWA . Friction works , No missing parts. Excellent condition. All 4 Propeller spin when runs!
About 19" (482 mm) Wingspan & 15" (381 mm)  Long.

The toy was made in 2 sections and came apart. To assemble the 2 parts,
the underbelly of the toy was shown, and the wing then
fitted into an opening there. A small lever was then turned to keep the 2 parts together.
When the toy was moved on the ground, the wheels turned the propellers.

Some information about the Yonezawa toy company

History

The logo for Yonezawa Toys.
Yonezawa Toys (米澤玩具 Yonezawa Gangu) (known also as Yone or simply Y) was founded in the 1950s in Tokyo. It was one of Japan's largest and most prodigious post-war toy manufacturers and an early participant in the growing radio control market.
The company and focused on the production of thousands of different electrically operated and mechanical toys through the early 1970s. Some were branded not as Yonezawa but as STS. It is unclear as to the origin of the STS label, but it is presumed to be that of an importer. Yonezawa briefly dabbled in radio control in the mid-1980s with the introduction of the 1/10-scale Wave Hunter buggy, sold in North America as the Monogram Lightning.
Under Sega’s leadership, Yonezawa Toys was briefly known as Sega-Yonezawa until the Yonezawa branding was dropped entirely in April 1998. Once Sega Sammy Holdings was formed, Sega Toys was reorganized under Sega’s entertainment contents business.*

This particular is in great shape considering it's about 60-65 years old.
These more modern toys are somewhat rare, and as such, this particular one
is selling in the 4 digit numbers (U.S. Dollars)!

You should have a look at Hardy Littleton's ebay store.
He most certainly has lots of interesting toys for sale!

Some Nice Dinkytoy Airplanes

Some Nice Dinky Toy Airplanes

I was fortunate to find Mr. Tim Humphrey's ebay store, and get his approval to write about him and his fine store. He has very nice photography, as well as detailed information on his Dinky toy airplanes that are listed for sale. Tim purchased the store several years ago, and kept the name "McCormick's Hobby". He sells other toys besides Dinky Toys . Examples of other toys are vintage (1950's) Revell model kits, and other types of toys, such as pressed steel. However, I selected his fine Dinky airplanes to write about for today. Tim has an excellent reputation on ebay.

Some History
Dinky Toys are die-cast Zamac** miniature toysthat were produced by Meccano Ltd. They were made in England from 1935 to 1979, at a factory in Binns Road in Liverpool. Dinky Toys were among the most popular diecast vehicles ever made predating other popular diecast marques, including Corgi, Matchbox, and Mattel's Hot Wheels (Ralston 2009, 7; Richardson 1999, 128).*

**Zamac is an alloy with its' base made of zinc. The other metals are aluminum, magnesium, and copper.
Frank Hornby established Meccano Ltd. in 1901 to make metal erector construction sets (Wainwright 2015). The company soon moved into trains with the first O gauge clockwork train appearing in 1920 (Ellis 2009, p. 15; Wainwright 2013).
In the early 1930s, Meccano had made many types of tin plate and other metal cars, like its Morgan and BSA three-wheelers, mostly in kit form (Interesting 1934, pp. 306–307). In 1933 Meccano Ltd issued a series of railway and trackside accessories to complement their O scale(1/45) Hornby model train sets (Force 1988, p. 6; Ramsay 1933, p. 88). These accessories were first called "Hornby Modelled Miniatures", but in the April 1934 issue of Meccano Magazine they were given the name "Meccano Dinky Toys" for the first time (Meccano Magazine 1934 p. 332) in August 1935, the name Meccano was dropped and the marque became DINKY TOYS until 1971 (Encyclopédie Dinky Toys). By December 1934 the Dinky name was also used for the "Dinky Builder" sets where coloured flat metal pieces could be hinged together to make buildings and vehicles (Esplen 2013).
One story is that the "Dinky" name came from a nickname that a friend gave to one of Frank Hornby's daughters. The word could have been derived from the Scottish "dink" meaning neat or fine (Simpson 2008).*
