Another Fine Book from Schiffer Publishing Ltd

Another Fine Book from
Schiffer Publishing Ltd

This is my third book review from Schiffer Publishing Ltd. These special books
on toys fall into a group titled "A Schiffer Book for Collectors".

The title of this book is:

Tinplate Toys
(From Schuco, Bing, and Other Companies)
 Jürgen Franzke, Editor

Revised 2nd Edition

Size:
Width x Height
8 1/2" x 11"
21.5 cm x 28 cm

The book is well-written, and has plenty of well-photographed
toys. The book is written  exclusively about German toy, with such famous
names as Schuco, Bing, Arnold, Distler, Doll & Co., Fischer, Gama,
and many others.

The first thing that I noticed is the excellent photography. The style
of photography today, especially for toys, is soft lighting from what is called a "softbox" flash unit, with a white foundation used for the base on which the toy rests on.

This type of lighting, combined with a white foundation,
presents the toys in the best way. The white base helps to reflect
light into parts of the toy, and  the toy shows  well.

The 2 Bing railcars above are one of my favourites from this post. I've never seen these toys before and they were manufactured by Bing in 1930.

Wow, 94 years ago. How time flies!

They were from a collector by the name of Mr. Manfred Seeberger.
The Tinplate Toys book shows the estimated price at the time of publication
as $2100-$3100 (I assume US Dollars).

When I have time,
I'll see if I can find current prices on the Internet.

If there is anyone out there who would like to help me out,
and check for current prices, please feel free to do so.

So that's it for today.

As always, thanks for dropping by,
and have a great part of the day
or night, wherever you may be.

A Schiffer Book for Collectors - Dinky Toys

Dinky Toys
Dr. Edward Force
Revised 7th edition

(A Schiffer Book for Collectors)

 Book Size:
Width x  Height x Thickness
9" x  5 7/8"  x 1/"2
22.8 cm  x  14.7 cm x  1.8 cm

This is the second book from Schiffer Publishing Ltd that I have the pleasure of writing about. Like all people who collect different collectibles, the world of toy collecting has a large group that collects toys. Dinky toys was very popular from its' beginning, and continues to be so. If you've been following my blog over the last 13 years, you'll understand.

Dr. Edward Force was a renowned author of books about toys. As well, he was a collector who had amassed a very big collection over time. This is his second
book that I am presenting on my blog.

The world is at a loss for this well-respected Doctor (PhD), toy collector, and fine author of books.

Introduction ( From the Internet)

The history of Dinky Toys started with Meccano.  Meccano Ltd was a toy company famous for making construction kits from metal parts that were assembled with nuts and bolts. It was started in 1898 by Mr. Frank Hornby.  In 1934, Meccano introduced Dinky Toys which replaced a production line titled
Hornby Modelled Miniatures (Source: Brightontoymuseum.co.uk)

The new toys that were introduced by Dinky Toys were different kinds of vehicles
in a scale of 1:43.  That meant that each unit of 1 is 3.5 inches or 90 mm. They were made of die-cast zamak (a zinc-aluminum alloy) . However, I did find 1 reference that stated that the allow was mazac, a composite alloy of magnesium, zinc, and copper. The toys were originally manufactured in England from 1934-1979.
The factory in Binns Road in Liverpool England closed in 1979.

This book , like the other Schiffer book that I previously wrote about,
is an excellent reference book for collectors. Of course, anyone who collects some times such as Dinky Toys will enjoy this book as well. There are lots of superbly-done photographs. The reason that I mention that the book is for collectors, is because there is an extensive and detailed section of the book.  This section, contains an encyclopaedic compilation of details of referring to Dinky Toys beginning in 1934 and continuing into the 1980's.

Dr. Force's Book is the 7th edition
There are 2 sub-sections in the book that identify
2 different systems for cataloging the vast collection:

"The Old System of Catalog Numbers"
pp 142 - 164

&

"The New System of Catalog Numbers"
pp 199

There is some information on Dinky Toy Action Kits, Hong Kong Dinky Toys,
and models inspired by Dinky Toys.

At the end of the book, there is a price guide
pp 204 - 224

Below is a typical excellent photo of a group of toy.
The written part refers to the catalog numbers.

The page below is the same as the page above.
What I did was add some arrows that refers to catalog numbers
in "The Old  System of Catalog Numbers"

"This system developed in the 1930's and remained
in use until 1954 in Britain and 1959 in France".

The page below is the same as the page above. However,
"The newer Dinky Toys catalog numbering system was
introduced  in 1954 in Britain, though it had its' origins earlier.

As I mentioned before, this book is for collectors, although anyone
can buy the book. The extensive detailed information, helps collectors, by providing lots of information relating to different colours, and of course, the different years that models were made.

If you ever collected stamps, you'll easily know what I mean.
Moreover, different colours in stamps made at different times (years), can
produce rarities. As such the values increase based on that rarity.

It's probably no different with Dinky Toys.

The world of Dinky Toys is still is around through people who love to collect
things. I never had Dinky toys though. If I had, I would have played with them in the parks and sidewalks, I doubt they would fetch a good price today though.

While I was writing this post, and doing a bit of research, I came across
an article about a recent Dinky Toy auction sale.

About the Author

Dr. Force passed away in 2013 at the age of 75. He was a highly-educated man who received his Ph.D in German Literature from Indiana University. Dr. Force taught
German at Central Connecticut University (USA) for 42 years. With his excellent  ability to having learned German, Dr. Force also worked with the Schiffer Publishing Company (Ltd) as a translator. But his "pièce de résistance" (outstanding event or item), was also in writing, and in collecting toys. Over a long period of time, Dr. Force had collected about 30,000 toys.*

I paraphrased the above introduction about Dr. Force from his introduction of this book*

I'm far from an expert or authority on toys, but the more I read and post on my blog,
the more I enjoy writing. With the Internet, there are lots of sources and opportunities
to learn about toys. One of the best ways is of course magazines and books, followed
by blogs, toy companies, and e-commerce sites such as ebay, Etsy and Liveauctioneers.

I've been blogging since 2011, and have learned a lot from reading. It took me a few years to buy books, but eventually I did. I don't have a big library of books about toys.
I have 25 books.

I have 10 books from Schiffer Publishing Ltd. In the beginning, I didn't know that Schiffer
published a lot of toy books, along with lots of other topics.  However, after several years of blogging, I realized Schiffer was an excellent resource for books on toys.

I'll be writing four posts about Schiffer books and their author.
For today, I've selected the first book that I most recently obtained.

What I've noticed about Schiffer Publishing is their excellent choice in their selection of
authors who write about toys. The 2 books that I am writing about today are
by the late author Dr. Edward Force.

Also, the photography and layout (how the items are arranged in the photo)
are also very well done. I was a photography teacher and a photographer
(I still am a photographer, but not as much now).

To arrange the toys that are presented on the 2 page screen-captures below takes a lot of time. You have to use long rulers or long pieces of wood to act as a reference point to
align all of the toys in a straight line. The angles of the toys all have to be parallel with each other. Those photos look so easy to do, but believe me, there was a lot of work to
line them up like soldiers lined up for a march. And one final note - the lighting and the white foundation that the toys are placed on, are both "with the times", ergo the latest style for
presenting many items in a catalogue-like arrangement.

I've noticed that there are books by Schiffer Publishing Ltd, and most other publishing companies, that are more of a reference and catalogue book than a narrative.

This type of book is a great resource for toy collectors. Not only are the toys described in terms of size, colour, materials, but they also have the periods of time when they were made. What's also interesting about this book is that the title of the book is:

Classic Miniature Vehicles
of Northern Europe

Since this book is about Northern European toy companies, each section related to a European toy company has a superbly-written and knowledgeable write-up of the company history, the country where it existed, or still exists, and dimensions of length in the metric system. Key people who started the company are also identified by name.

A good portion of the book contains both the histories of toy companies,
as well as the descriptions of the toys. Some toys were made in many different variations.
As an example, There is a 1959 Tekno Volkswagen Van (96 mm or 3.78 inches in length) that lists 27
different variations of the toy.  I'm sure that Dr. Force was writing this specific information for serious toy collectors who like to collect the entire set of toys. Also, I'm sure that certain variations are more valuable than others. I can't even fathom the amount of time and research that Dr. Force invested to compile all of this specific detailed information.

I'll be continuing more of this post later this week.

A Book Collection for Sale

A Book Collection For Sale

First and foremost, I hope everyone is doing well and are healthy. These are very hard times, and most people are  following what the authorities tell them. However, there are others who don't care about rules and are risking getting the Corona Virus. Several incidents have happened where people congregated in group and caught the virus. Other people had the virus and didn't tell anyone, and they passed on the virus to others. Our federal, provincial, and city governments have now created  hard rules  for disobeying new laws and rules of conduct and financial penalties (some as high as $ 6,000.00). I hope these people will know now that they won't be allowed to break the law.

I've decided to sell my collection of toy books.  I have 39 assorted sizes of books from pamphlets to coffee table books ( large books), and including hard and soft covered books. I'm selling them all together, and am asking $ 500.00 US dollars. Please note that collectively, the books weigh
62 pounds  (29.4835 Kg). Also, the cost of shipping is going to be expensive depending where you live. You may also have to pay duties or taxes on the books. The books were published in different years. Some books are reproductions of original books, and there are as I mentioned small pamphlets.

The reason for not selling them individually is that the set makes a good start to those who collect toys, and I felt that someone who in fact is a collector or seller of toys would like the collection. If nobody will want to buy the collection within 3 months, then I will sell them individually.
