Two Fine Dayton Toy Companies

Another source for finding inspiration and ideas for writing a post are from other places on the Net such as blogs, magazines, newspapers, toy sellers, auction houses and so forth.  There's always something to find that I haven't seen before, but it takes some patience and spending the time. And so it was with the Dayton Toy and Specialty Company.

Dayton, Ohio, U.S.A. is an important part of America.  Being located in the central part of the USA and surrounded by about 550-65% of the total USA population, you can easily understand how it was and still is important to the country. At one time, there were lots and lots of toy companies and other manufacturers located in Ohio.

The Dayton Friction Toy Works

The  Dayton Friction Toy Works  was created in 1909 and closed in 1935. It was created by Mr. D.P.Clark. The Clark Toy Company was the Precursor (came before)  the Dayton Friction Toy works. Their specialty was also in the production of pressed steel toys, but with a big difference. Their toys included a patented horizontal flywheel for moving their toys. Their patent was accepted in 1926, and under the trade (business) name was called "Gyro".

If you look underneath the  above toys, and at the centre between the rear axles and wheels, you will see a small round "bulge". That bulge is the flywheel movement.marks or special parts could be readily shown to the viewer. If you're interested in a better view in a "flywheel" machine for toys, just go to Liveauctioneer or E-Bay, and search for  Dayton Toys.  You should be able to find someone who has photographed the underside of this Dayton toy.

The Dayton Toy and Specialty Company

The Dayton Toy and Specialty Company was founded by Mr. Dick Cummings and produced toys from the mid-1920's until the early 1930's. The great Depression much have caused the closure of this fine toy company. They, like many other companies of the time started to produce heavy-gauge (thickness)  painted pressed steel toys. Their toys were transportation toys such as cars trucks ,and even a few older-style boats such as paddle wheels. Their brand name on many of their trucks was "Son-ny".

What's interesting, as you'll notice later on is that they sometimes produced toys with subtle differences based on the same design. When you look at the trucks you should be able to see the differences, but if not,  read the descriptions  and you'll see what I mean.

You can see how these toys were so well made, that they have been around for almost 90 years. That's a great attribute to these 2  fine companies that once upon a time and long ago, made these great toys!

Thanks for visiting,

and have a great part of the day,
wherever you may be,
Stacey
