Revisiting Mr. Frederick Pals on ebay

I've been slow to add blogs this season. However, what I've been doing is to bring back people and companies who have helped me out in the past. Today's post is about Mr. Frederick Pals. In the past, he allowed me to use his photos and write about him, and use his excellent photos. You can do a search on my blog to find the previous blog posts that I've written about him.

What's great about Frederick's store is the fact that he has lots of toys from Europe. That's where he live, and specifically in Holland. You don't see lots of toys from Europe in North America in one place or seller, so visiting Frederick's sight lets you see lots of toys that you might not be familiar with, or normally see in North America.

Most of the time, sellers research their toys in order to know who the manufacturer is, and when the toy was made. Mr. Frederick Pals is a very knowledgeable person who has a whole lot of reference books for old toys. He even used to add the reference book into his photos of toys

for the possible buyer to know the exact description and manufacturer of the toy.

When I went to visit his fine store yesterday, I noticed that he didn't have his reference books in the photos, but he had many nice identified toys, as well as several unidentified toys. He also now takes his excellent photographs against a white background, and doesn't use his myriad of reference books in the photos anymore.

These 2 toys were the highest priced from all of his toys for sale as of this date.

It's hard to know the price of an unknown manufacturer's toy. However, Frederick has been an ebay seller for a long time, and has an excellent reputation, So I'm sure the prices of these "unknowns" have been well-researched.

The sizes of these toys are not indicated. However the airplane is a larger toy, compared with the penny toy, which usually were very small. And if you were interested in these 2 toys, you could always contact Frederick on ebay.

If you look at the front view of this airplane, you will notice a small

spindle between the 2 front wheels. That was for a coiled wire or string that would connect to the propeller from inside the body of the airplane. As the toy was rolled, the wheels would 

casue the spindle to rotate and transfer movement to the propeller.

The first time I visited Mr. Frederick Pals, I was awed with the number of old toys that he was selling. The next thing was his "moniker" on ebay - Historical_cars_and_toys_byfreek2012, and the third was the way he presented his toys, and the reference books that he used to match up with the toys that he was selling. Most of his toys would be photographed with the page where the toy appeared in a reference book, and Frederick has plenty of them!

    I've been returning to my old posts and checking to see whom I have written about in the past. I haven't catalogued the individuals, companies, and museums who have helped me out, so it't hard to find people or companies from the past. I forgot about Mr. Frederick Pals, but I certainly knew about his fine ebay store, so when I wrote for permission, having mentioned to  Frederick that I had written about him before, hue remembered me, and granted me permission again.

   Frederick always has a marvellous collection of toys for sale in his ebay store, and this time was no exception. But it's his descriptions and photos that are well done. He usually uses a book of toys behind the toy that he is presenting, and the book usually has a photo of the rare toys that he has up for auction in. But  just when I thought that Frederick couldn't improve on his excellent ebay store, I was wrong. He had started to use an ebay company called inkfrog. Inkfrog is a website that redirects ebay viewers to their website.The website then allows you to look at large-sized photos for your convenience and details. With Frederick having an excellent reputation on ebay, and taking excellent photos, the use of  inkfrog has taken him one step better than what he had before for his  

 ebay store.

These photos are very large, and allow you, the potential client, to view lots of detail of the toy.

Above are images that Frederick took for  both  ebay and  ink frog. I made them this size, but if you double-click on the photo, you will be able to see it much larger.

The photos were under-exposed, but you could see quite well the details of the toy on  ink frog.

All I did below was a minor exposure correction, and changing the grey background to white.

   I hadn't visited my friend, Mr. Frederick Pals and his fine ebay website in a long time.  I had just written a new past earlier this week about another Frederic, and thus was reminded of the first Frederick. Frederick Pals' photography was always excellent, and he has the most interesting tin toys. He provided plenty of photos to those watching his listings ion ebay,and he has good information about the toys.

I Never Stop Being Amazed

at This Exceptional ebay Seller

   If you haven't been to my blog before, what I like to do is visit Liveauctioneers and ebay regularly in order to find old and antique toys. However, try as I may, I haven't been able to get permission from several European auctioneers to be able to write about them and of course their toys.

   However, better than that, I have been able to make friends with an exceptional ebay seller by the name of Mr. Frederick Pals. Mr. Pals goes by the name of Freek on ebay. If you do an ebay search for wind-up toys, European toys, antique European toys, or simply wind-up toys, you will definitely find Frederick and his exceptional collection of toys that he always has for sale. 

   What is more exceptional about Frederick is the fact that he takes great photographs of all his items, and lots of them as well!  And, he know his toys. Whenever he photographs his toys, he places the, against a book backdrop that will show you similar or even the identical toy in the book. And he has lots ands lots of books that he uses both as backgrounds to the toys, and to provide great descriptions and data about the toys. 

    I've written several times about Frederick and his exceptional toys, and have received permission to modify his photos, but never the toys. If you search for Frederick Pals on my blog, you will find at least 4 more posts.

For a toy that is almost 85 years old, it is in exceptional and unbelievable condition. What I like about  some of the Maërkin toys of this period, like the one below is that a child got to not onoybuild it from a kit, but to play with it also. But even better is that these toys were engineered tough, and they were meant to be played with-rough!

I left the photo-edified photos and the description for the last part of the post.

This is an exceptional toy in excellent condition, and I had to save the best for last!

I never alter the toy itself,but I like to place in against white in order to show it best (my personal opinion). I will though, try and adjust exposure, shadow and highlight details, and colour.

This certainly is a fine toy. I like the Maerklin toys because

 they were and still are made very well and strong.

It's too bad Frederick lives across the ocean and not across my street or even across town.

I would be at his house every day, asking if I could play with, I meant "look" at his toys!

   I'm very fortunate to have many fine people who help me out, and one of them is Mr. Frederick Pals from Holland. He's very easygoing, and has allowed me to photo-edit his images. He was even so pleased with the effect, that he asked me (and I readily agreed) to make a slide show for his brother who is studying photography, to show how the editing was done.  What's great about having European friends is that they sell European toys, and usually have many more since the toys are more readily available there.

   I wrote Frederick if I could go one step further with my photo-editing, and he agreed. I'll send him another mini slide show, as this effect is very easy to do.  The reason I asked Frederick if I could go further with the photo edit was because this particular toy is very, very rare. I felt it deserved to catch the reader's attention even more.  Frederick's listings on ebay are easily recognized because he always places his toys against a background of a book or two. I'd certainly like to see his book collection, because books are great resources when you find toys without enough description to them.

It's always interesting to see which toys are the rarest. Georg Levy (Gely) manufacture red many beautiful lithographed tin toys at that time,yet this particular model is very rare. For the image above, I simply removed the colour of the books photo, and the colour of the foundation (what the toy was resting on). I then did a "motion blur' to give the illusion that the toy was moving. This particular motorcycle came in 2 variations. One is the above with the spoked wheels, and the other was with plane wheels with only the cream colour.

The photo above and below are Frederick's style when presenting his merchandise.  The book that he's using in this case is one from Rich Bertoia of the highly-renowned Bertoia Auctions  in New Jersey, USA. Not only is he part of the successful American auction house, but he's an author of antique toy motorcycles. 

I always wonder why so many  American toy manufacturers in the 1920's-1930's were producing such less sophisticated toys (cast iron) compared with the European manufactures of the time. The reason has to be more than simply cost, and one day, I'll have to research my own question to find the answer. However, by the early 1890's ,Germans and Europeans had successfully developed colour lithography on tin, and the process readily transferred to toy production.

You can see Rich Bertoia's name (blurred) on the right side above the lady passenger.

I cropped the top (cut off part of the photo) so the entire foundation (why the toy is resting on) occupied the whole picture frame. With less distraction, the toy shadow adds a nice balance to the actual toy. 

In this photo, Rich Bertoia's book happens to be opened on a page that has the same model of toy as Frederick happens to be selling on ebay.
